Chocolate Olive Oil Crinkle Gelt Cookies

Chocolate Olive Oil Crinkle Gelt Cookies

I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about a post before. I mean, have you seen these cookies? If you think they look gorgeous in the picture, JUST. WAIT. TILL. YOU. MAKE. THEM.

My excitement over baked goods needs some explaining, I know. You see, as I’ve mentioned many times on my blog, I’m not the biggest baker. But I had this epiphany one night. I was thinking about crinkle cookies, and how you get those beautiful cracks in the cookie when it bakes. Traditionally, crinkle cookies are rolled in confectionary sugar, so they result in a beautiful zebra-like design. I figured, if I spray the cookies with edible gold spray paint, they’ll kind of look like a crumpled up foil wrapper from those chocolate Chanukah gelt coins. Am I right?

I thought about this one night last week and I was so excited, I couldn’t sleep. First thing the next morning, I ran to the store to collect my ingredients. My friends over at Colavita had recently sent me a few samples of their amazing olive oil, and I knew I had to incorporate it into the recipe. After all, isn’t it the miracle of olive oil that we celebrate on Chanukah? Luckily, Colavita included their 100% GREEK olive oil, and that just put it over the top. Olive oil and chocolate make a wonderful combination, so I set out developing a recipe for fudgy and delicious crinkle cookies. A few hours and a messy kitchen later, I hit the jackpot. To intensify the chocolate flavor without having to melt down chocolate over a double-boiler (I’m always looking for the easy way out, aren’t I?), I added some coffee and used dutch process cocoa powder. The result is a chewy, intensely-flavored chocolate cookie that’s reminiscent of brownies, but oh so much prettier!

To round out my Hanukkah cookie theme, I topped the cookies off with some real chocolate gelt coins. They’ve gone a long way since the waxy variety that used to be available. Nowadays, some of the chocolate gelt is made from real Belgian dark chocolate. So tell me, does it get any better than fudgy chocolate cookies topped with real dark chocolate?

In my special kosher package from Colavita, I received 4 bottles of their amazing premium world selection first cold pressed extra virgin olive oils, including:

Colavita 100% Argentinian Fruity
Colavita 100% Greek Classic
Colavita 100% Californian Mild

  1. My favorite deep fried foods must be a tie between salmon latkes and falafel. I already love BIB on facebook. Chanukah sameach!

  2. These are stunning. Brilliant idea. Oh, and I love yeast doughnuts, although I prefer plain doughnuts without filling, with just a plain sugar coating or clear glaze.
    Chanuka Sameach!

  3. My favorite deep fried food…..hmmmmm…….the one I eat too much is chicken wings, and the one I wish I ate more often – deep fried Snickers.

  4. These are so pretty!
I pretty much like most things deep fried! Chicken, latkes, donuts, eggrolls, you name it. I want to try deep fried avocado one day. I also love Olive oil and use it on everything so id love to win!

  5. My favorite fried food has to be really, really good french fries. If not really, really good french fries, then deep fried oreos!

  6. My favorite friend foods include apple fritters, latkes, donuts, churros and donuts. I know I said donuts twice. ;)

  7. Wow. These are the most GORGEOUS cookies. Like, really impressive. I don’t usually even try to make my food pretty, but this looks easy enough to try.

I’m from Maryland originally, and I have to say that my favorite fried food just might be hush puppies.

  8. So beautiful and festive! I was thinking of making these cookies sometime during the holiday. Now I just need to get my hands on some of that spray! Fried hot wings are my favorite food overall. French fries come in a close second for froed foods.

  9. I already like BiB everywhere possible because I simply lve the blog. My favorite deep fried food is Zeppole. Which is basically a donut but not exactly. Sprinkled with powdered sugar the stuff is addictive.

    Chag Chanukah Sameach

  10. My favorite are definitely onion rings! Fast food, old fashioned, homemade… It doesn’t make a difference!

The cookies are really beautiful and the pictures are fantastic! Can’t wait to make them for all the Chanuka parties!

  11. My favorite deep fried food is Falafels. I can never have enough of them.

Your cookies look lovely. I might even make them today .

  12. Can I use regular extra virgin oil? I want to make these now and that’s the only ting i have … they look amazing!

    1. Good question, Kate. Because when I originally wrote the recipe, I didn’t chill the cookies, but when I tested them again, I realized that they really do need to be chilled. I will revise the recipe accordingly. Thanks for pointing it out!

  13. What a genius idea, making these stunning cookies with Greek Olive Oil!! Hmmm, my favorite fried food would have to be french fries!

  14. Eggrolls, Fried chicken, Tempura, goood french fries & sweet potato fries oh yeah taquitos & chimichangas!!Oh yeah fried zucchini! One more oh yeah churros!

  17. Hey! I’m already a huge fan of yours. (on FB and on you blog page).
    Those cookies are absolutely STUNNING!!
what an awesome idea!! The gold shimmer & the coin toppers!!
It’s my son’s Hanachas Tefillin tomorrow, and I wanna bring a tray of these!!
P.s. I love anything batter deep fried!!!
    Happy Chanukah from Israel!! :)

  18. Firstly, the cookies really are beautiful and I can really see myself in your shoes – unable to sleep because of such a great baking idea. Thank you for reminding me about the recipes I saw last year, with putting chocolate gelt pieces into the center of the cookie, now I gotta go make them before Chanukah is over. My favorite deep fried food would have to be battered, honey-mustard chicken fingers (yum!) But if I had a preference of how to incorporate olive oil into a Chanukah recipe, I would rather a cookie than chicken :) Thank you for the recipe! Can’t wait to try it!

  19. My favorite deep fried food are samosas. My second favorite? Latkes!

Those cookies are gorgeous! Now I have to go pick up some edible spray paint with my coupon for the hobby store!

  20. my husband’s wings! we got a mini deep fryer for our wedding and he’s been perfecting his recipe for over a year now!

  21. I made zuchinni latkes and my family loved them. My husband said they were sweet and smooth and couldnt eat enough.

  22. My favorite deep fried food would have to be…..mozzarella sticks with yummy sauce! Maybe BIB has a good recipe? Love your blog!

  23. My favorite deep fried food is wonton… any kind, chicken, chocolate raspberry, cream cheese and fake crab. All are yum!

  24. I just made the batter for this and it came out really thick I can barely mix it! Any idea why? How can I fix it or will it still come out the same?

    1. Are you sure you measured correctly? Did you use a dry measuring cup for the dry ingredients and a liquid measuring cup for the liquid ingredients? The batter should be thick but you should still be able to mix it.

      1. I ended up adding an extra egg to make it a drop more moist – the batter was still really thick but they still came out delicious!!

  26. Hi! Made these last night for my son’s Hanukkah Boutique and they are both gorgeous AND delicious!! I also appreciated that they were SO easy to make since I am not a baker and generally loathe making cookies… :) We didn’t even get out the mixer!

A few notes if anyone is going to make these: Yes, the batter IS thick! That is okay. We didn’t add an extra egg, just stuck in the fridge for 2 hours (as per directions) and then rolled the balls.

I think the recipe should say “instant coffee”? My husband, who is a baker, saw me trying to dissolve our coffee grounds in hot water and let me know that wouldn’t work. :) I just strained it, but it probably would have been better if I’d had instant granules, which do dissolve…

This is going to be on my yearly rotation, thanks!

  27. My kids are constantly requesting these cookies! During the year I just use confectioners sugar instead of the spray paint. They are the best crinkle cookies out there! Thanks!!

    1. The chocolate can turn white after freezing so I don’t recommend it. You can freeze them without the chocolate coin and try pressing them in after.

  28. I remember making these last year for my daughters teachers. I did the zebra cookie recipe and did the spray with coins. I’m wondering whats so much of the dough difference, and when finished baked are they sweet and soft?
    Thank you!

  29. Love your blog and going to make these for our annual Chanukah party! Do they freeze well?

    Favorite fried food is zucchini.

  30. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS RECIPE! I made these last year and loved them. All worked out fine then. This year I was making them again because they were a hit and the cookies caught fire in the oven. I looked at the spray can (same can I bought last year, the same exact brand mentioned in the ingredient list), and it said FLAMMABLE. KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT. I had to put out a fire and throw it all away! BE VERY CAREFUL MAKING THESE! DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM AND CONSIDER USING A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE GOLD!!!!!

    1. Hi Krystyna, thank you so much for telling me that, that is really scary. I would love to clarify what happened with you. Firstly, all spray cans have a warning that say “flammable keep away from heat” since aerosol contents are under pressure, they are flammable. This does not mean that the paint itself is flammable otherwise it would not be food safe. Did you by any chance spray it while the cookies were inside the oven? Can you share exactly what your process was?
